Embraced by God our Father
In the places where the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated today, the end of the Gospel (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22) has this amazing moment:
After all the people had been baptized
and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,
heaven was opened
and the Holy Spirit descended upon him
in bodily form like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven,
"You are my beloved Son;
with you I am well pleased."
You and I, of course, are not Christ. Nor are we likely to see with our eyes of flesh the Holy Spirit descend in bodily form like a dove.
Yet by the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the only-begotten and eternal Son of the Father, we are made children of God.
And in the depths of our prayer
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
we seek to have that same experience
with the eyes and ears of faith:
for the clouds of our mundane life to be moved aside
and the light of heaven to be revealed,
for the Holy Spirit to come upon us
in a powerful and exciting way,
and for us to feel the embracing words of God himself
as, by the grace of Christ, he says to us
"You are my beloved child;
with you I am well pleased."
