Summer Discernment Retreat

"Once again, the Dominican Vocation Office will offer a summer discernment retreat for men considering a vocation to the Order of Preachers in the Province of St. Joseph. This year the retreat will be held at Mary Immaculate Retreat Center in Northampton, PA from August 12 through 14, 2005.

"The retreat center is the former seminary for the Vincentians which was purchased by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to be the home of their spiritual year of formation for seminarians.

"So, if you're not heading to Cologne for World Youth Day, why not consider this unique opportunity to pause and consider where God might be calling you?

"The title of this summer's retreat will be 'Duc in Altum: The Dominican Life.' Duc in Altum is Latin for "put out into the deep." This theme first received attention in Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Letter Tertio millennio ineunte. Our late Holy Father's pastoral plan for the third millennium of Christianity is amazingly well-suited to Dominican life. Copies of that document will be available for participants.

"As in years past, there will be plenty of time for Eucharistic Adoration. The retreat will begin at 5:30 PM Friday evening, August 12 and end Sunday, August 14 after lunch at 1:30 PM...."

"If you want to attend this Aug 12-14 retreat, please let me know a.s.a.p. so that I know how many rooms to reserve. If you aren't sure and need to ask more questions, feel free to E-mail or call the Vocation Office vocations@dominicanfriars.org or call our toll-free number (800) 529-1205.

"YOU MUST CONTACT THE DOMINICAN VOCATION OFFICE IN ORDER TO COME ON THIS RETREAT. NO ONE WILL BE PERMITTED TO STAY WHO SHOWS UP UNANNOUNCED (i.e. Without my expressed approval).

"Last year 14 men attended this retreat in Columbus, OH and found it helpful in their discernment. May the Lord Jesus bless us again this year as we seek to understand the pastoral plan which John Paul, the Great, gave the Church for the Third Millennium and where Dominicans fit in that plan.

"I look forward to hearing from you!

"In Jesus, Mary, Joseph and St. Dominic,

Fr. Bill Garrott, OP
Director of Vocations
Province of St. Joseph, Order of Preachers
