Start of the workweek

Some people really hate Mondays.

On Mondays, they look at the week ahead and they look at their lives and say, “What am I doing this for?”

The words from today’s Gospel (Jn. 6:22-29) may therefore have a very special resonance.

Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life...

Indeed, for many, even if they are successful in the eyes of the world, they feel that their work and their lives are unfulfilling.

The things that they work for – the possessions, the prestige – are fleeting at best. At worst, every day’s labor is drudgery.

These days of sede vacante – while the chair of Peter is vacant, while we mourn the loss of Pope John Paul II and await a new visible head of the Church – are an especially good time to look at our lives in the light of the Gospel.

Are we working for those things that endure unto eternal life? Are we doing the work of God? Do the things we say and the things we do clearly demonstrate the belief we have in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

Yes, it’s Monday, the start of another workweek: a good time to get our lives on track to do the work of God, to rededicate ourselves to our godly obligations and to live to the fullest our faith and life in Christ.
