Novendiali - Day 4

Novendiali - Nine Offical Days of Mourning for Pope John Paul II.

Today's Focus: For the Chapters of the Patriarchal Basilicas in Rome

(Chapters are an ancient type of religious community canonically attached to Cathedrals, etc.)

Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, archbishop emeritus of Boston and archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of St Mary Major, will preside at a 5:00 p.m. Mass.

The nuances of Cardinal Law's being "kicked upstairs" are sometimes difficult to appreciate (especially for people damaged by the reprehensible scandals in Boston and elsewhere), but I personally believe that our focus right now needs to be on mourning the Holy Father who has just died and on praying for the one who is to come.

UPDATE: The Washington Post's reporting on the precedent for the archpriest of St. Mary Major's involvement was misleading.
