Beam me up, Spirit!

The account of Philip and the Ethiopian in today’s first reading (Acts 8:26-40) captures the imagination of many, especially because some elements seem so supernatural and amazing.

Picture it! An Angel of the Lord speaks to Philip. Moments later, Philip hears the actual voice of the Spirit. Then, to top it all off, “when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more.”

Wow. That’s cool!

God can and does perform wonders such as these, but if we read and think carefully, we may see that it is possible that these actions of God were not as visually spectacular as we might first imagine (on the other hand, maybe they were - or perhaps even more spectacular).

Whether God chooses to manifest himself in our lives at a particular time and place through wonders and miracles or through quiet promptings in our hearts, it is essential for us always to be open and attentive to the Lord.

As we go through our day, it is important for us to be listening for the voice of the Spirit directing us where and to whom we need to reach out with the truth, the love, and the Spirit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
