Paths of glory

Born to upper class parents, he took a military career track. He served in combat and was even a prisoner of war. He was subsequently appointed to positions of authority and seemed destined for great things.

He chose to be a priest, to care for the sick and for orphans, giving away everything he had: forsaking earthly glory and comfort for the glory of God.

While caring for plague victims, St. Jerome Emiliani died of plague himself on this very day in 1537.
