Inappropriate idea?

Over the weekend, someone who has just written a book about politicians and their faith opined that the statement “God wants all people to be free” may be good theology, but inappropriate as a public policy position.

He must really have problems with this (emphasis added):

"We hold these truths to be self-evident:
That all men are created equal;
that they are endowed by their Creator
with certain unalienable rights;
that among these are
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..."
