Get ready
“(The one) who comes to me,
listens to my words, and acts on them.
That one is like a man building a house,
who dug deeply
and laid the foundation on rock;
when the flood came,
the river burst against that house
but could not shake it
because it had been well built.
"But the one who listens and does not act
is like a person who built a house
on the ground without a foundation.
When the river burst against it,
it collapsed at once
and was completely destroyed."
Luke 6:47b-49
News stories about terrible hurricanes may make this reading particularly frightening for us today.
Hurricanes, however, are only one of the dangers we may be forced to endure in life. We remember painfully the terrorist attacks that took place 3 years ago today. We know about wars and threats from many sides. We also have the moral storms around us: the pressures of daily life, the irresistible currents of popular culture, and the mighty winds of elite opinion makers.
We should not wait for the storms to get worse. We should constantly be attentive to that which will be our secure foundation (no matter what life may bring): our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
