Great expectations

Today’s readings are long (unless one has chosen the optional short forms) but full of treasure.

The readings speak of the faith of those who went before us and how they persevered in expectation of what God would do for them.

The readings also make clear, implicitly and explicitly, that expectations have been placed on us. We are the ones who follow in the footsteps of those who went before us. We are the ones who often boast of the “Faith of our Fathers.” We are the recipients of so much of the wisdom and good examples that have come down to us through the ages. We are also blessed with more material goods than were enjoyed by any in the ages past.

Where much is given, much is required.

What are we doing with all that we have been given? Or do we simply yearn for more?

Have we been using all that we have been given – our time, our possessions, and our talents – for the good of others and for the glory of God? Or have we been pretty much focused on ourselves?

Where much is given, much is required.

If the Lord comes for us tomorrow, will we have met His expectations?

Come, Lord,
show us the way
and be merciful,
in Your great love,
Lord Jesus Christ,
my Savior and friend.
