Ambition, convenience, and the Church

For some, involvement in the Church is a matter of convenience: we are involved when it is convenient and our decisions are based on whatever is the most convenient.

For some, involvement in the Church is motivated by ambition: everything is seen through the prism of power as we struggle over power and control.

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 20:17-28), our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ shows us a different way:

Whoever wishes to be great among you
shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you
shall be your slave.

Just so,
the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, be merciful to me - a sinner.
