Once Bishop of Krakow, now a Saint

He would eventually be seen as a threat by the man who exercised absolute power in Poland, who subsequently ordered him killed.

The first attempt was unsuccessful, so King Boleslaus personally walked up to the altar and hacked Bishop Stanislaus to death in the middle of Mass on this very day in 1079.

St. Stanislaus was canonized in 1253.
