Singling out politicians?

The AP quotes Georgia state Rep. Mickey Stephens, a Democrat who supports abortion rights, as denouncing the declaration by some bishops that pro-abortion Catholic politicians should not be admitted to Holy Communion.

"I don't think they banned any of those priests who committed those horrible crimes against little boys. I don't know why they're singling out politicians."

With all due respect, a Penitent Blogger says...

Catholics in prominent positions who repeatedly, publicly, and unrepentently oppose core Church teaching single themselves out.

As a rule, the priests who did those crimes didn't repeatedly and publicly declare that their conscience permitted them to do these things.

As a rule, priests who commit abuse against children are banned from the exercise of their priesthood for life.

Sinners who express repentence, sincere contrition, and firm purpose of amendment can be given absolution.

Absolution cannot be given to those who do not repent, are not sorry, and refuse to change.
